CORE CONCEPT
The ego is a fragile structure built upon a biological foundation. Culture—as information and belonging—intersects with this baseline, conditioning how we are perceived: our social legibility depends on shared cultural codes, not merely on who we are.
The XXY Portrait framework operates across three distinct structural layers:
- The Eyes: Replaced by a visual notation referencing a foundational biological duality. This marks the primary layer of perception—the exact moment the gaze meets the Other, preceding cultural interpretation.
- The Cheeks: The sole irrational element within the composition. They expand proportionally to the subject’s emotionality. In contemporary subjects, this expansion regularly occupies up to 30% of the face, signaling how emotionality increasingly overrides rational control within contemporary social systems.
- The Celestial Code: Positioned above the head, an astrological notation marks the subject’s exact moment of entry into the system. Applied not as a predictive tool, but as an ancestral form of psychology in the Jungian sense—a symbolic lexicon mapping archetypal structures.
As above, so below: how we read ourselves mirrors how we navigate our environment. The hyper-fragile, emotionally overexposed contemporary ego reflects an urban landscape that has lost its measure.
EGO SYSTEM translates this tension into an expanding physical archive, bridging digital craftsmanship with site-specific installations.
DIGITAL CRAFT & THE POLAROID ARCHIVE
Distinguishing itself from automated algorithmic generation, EGO SYSTEM relies on a meticulous, manual digital craft workflow. Each portrait is hand-constructed layer by layer in the studio, integrating biological data, astronomical ephemerides, and precise vector geometry before being physicalized.
The Mediums & Formats:
- The Original Polaroid (Core Archive): The instant film format seals the digital construction into a non-reproducible, physical object. Despite the extensive studio preparation, the final image is fixed in a single instant. Designed for serial accumulation rather than isolated wall contemplation, the project builds an expanding living archive.
- Hand-Drawn Works & Oversized Polaroid Prints: Introduces scale variation alongside the small serial format, breaking visual repetition and demanding prolonged, intimate engagement.
- Monumental Lightboxes (Public Dimension): Selected archive portraits are translated into large-scale illuminated lightboxes (100×100 cm). The visual code shifts from intimate archive seriality to a powerful signal embedded in physical space.
EXHIBITION & INTERVENTION STRUCTURE
Phase I — The Participatory Archive
A curated collection of portraits is gathered within a community or institution. Each subject is processed through the EGO SYSTEM matrix in the studio and rendered as an original, numbered Polaroid. The collection is presented as an immersive exhibition, forming a collective portrait of a specific time and place.
Phase II — Urban & Institutional Signal
Key portraits selected from the archive are transformed into large-scale lightboxes and installed within public or institutional environments. The portrait’s code—gaze, emotional ratio, time entry—moves beyond the exhibition space, becoming a permanent visual landmark.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Saul Zanolari is a visual artist with a background in Philosophy. He debuted in Milan in 2005 at Galleria Luciano Inga-Pin, transitioning from traditional painting to high-definition digital craft. His career expanded internationally with a two-year residency in Beijing culminating at F2 Gallery (Fabien Fryns), a five-year collaboration with JOYCE Galleries (Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai), representation at Heist Gallery in New York, and the monument project SZ CHAPEL exhibited in Valencia.
Following a radical formal reset, Zanolari developed EGO SYSTEM: a generative portrait framework exploring digital identity, social masks, and the human being as the primary node of contemporary experience.
